Spooky and scary health science 🤯⚰️🦠☠️😱

Pryvit! (Hello in Ukrainian),

In light of the spooky season, here are a few fascinating pieces of science-based health-related content that I enjoyed and thought you may enjoy too.

The first two are YouTube Shorts, the next is an article, and the fourth is a book recommendation.

Happy Halloween! 🐈‍⬛👻🎃🦇🕸️

1 – What happens to your muscles when you die (rigor mortis)

Here’s a link to Lauren the Mortician's YouTube Short called: You die. Then you stiffen. Then you loosen. It’s like a really morbid Pilates class. #mortician

2 – Ancient microbes are defrosting and escaping the melting ice caps (and yes, some have come back to life)

Here's a link to Today I Learned Science's YouTube Short about the Permafrost zombie virus.

3 – Why do some people like to be scared? (According to psychiatry)

Fear starts at the amygdala, alerts the body via stress hormones, and is perceived by the hippocampus (that provides context for the fear). How we respond to fear is based on the balance between how "real" the fear is to us versus our sense of control of the situation.

And, fear isn't only entertainment, for many it can be a mental health concern. In all of the scary things this season (and all year round), I like to keep in mind that anxiety and fear disorders impact nearly one in four people.

Here's a link to the Conversation article called: The science of fright: Why we love to be scared

4 – A Taste for Poison by Neil Bradbury

The toxicology nerd in me LOVED this book!

Each chapter tells a true story of a historical murder using a specific poison.

If you're interested in deadly toxins or true crime, I recommend it.
